Inspection

Out of sight, out of mind; the idea that something is unimportant and can be forgotten or dismissed because it isn’t in our direct view. This is sometimes the mindset of people when it comes to buried underground utilities such as sanitary and drainage pipelines. Unfortunately, all sewers have a finite lifespan and many are well past their design life. These sewers are prone to a wide number of structural, constructional and operational problems including open and displaced joints, infiltration (the inflow of groundwater into the sewers), exfiltration (the outflow of sewerage into the ground), cracking, fracturing, deformation, root intrusion, deposition of solids such as silt or gravel, accumulation of grease, collapse and more.

With these important utilities buried right under our feet and conveyance of our waste water to treatment facilities or discharge points critical to maintenance of our health and road infrastructure, it is absolutely vital that these underground pipes not sit forgotten. Many potential failures can be prevented with a solid video inspection program. Detecting these deficiencies early allows owners to take steps to ensure further deterioration does not occur and also prevent dangerous fails like sinkholes, blockages and collapses.

CCTV Inspection

With CCTV inspection the process of identifying troublesome sewer conditions before they become problems is more efficient than ever.

Mar-Tech has a full complement of CCTV tools for pipe inspection.

Laser Profiling

The Laser Profiler is used in conjunction with our CCTV inspection system to project a ring of laser light on the interior of a pipeline. Analysis of the projected ring of light allows for measurement of defects, pipe size, lateral diameters, water levels and other features, as well as automatic and precise analysis of pipe ovality and capacity up to 30 times per second.

Deflection Testing

When new PVC, polyethylene, and fiberglass sewer pipes are installed, deflection testing is always part of the process.

Locating

Locator

Using a locator and sonde can accurately locate pipeline, manholes, and cables, as well as confirm line continuity and branches, and distinguish between target and other lines. The PDL2 locator used by Mar-Tech has a 512 MHz frequency, and provides fast, accurate depth measurement.

Smoke Testing

Smoke_Test_Emission

Smoke testing is a proven method of effectively identifying inflow (storm/ground water into sanitary sewers), connected roof and basement drains, yard drains, illegal taps, and storm sewer cross-connection. Reducing inflow and infiltration saves the costs of treating ground water at wastewater treatment plants.

The Environmental Protection Agency has advised municipalities to eliminate inflow and infiltration into sewer systems. Smoke testing sewer systems is an effective way to accomplish this goal.
